Alumna Rev. Mary Fast Receives Faithfulness in Ministry Cross Award
February 28, 2008
The Rev. Mary Fast, Sioux Falls Seminary alumna, is among the 2008 honorees for the Faithfulness in Ministry Cross Award given out by Luther Seminary.
Fast, now serving at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Yutan, Nebraska, received her Master of Divinity from Sioux Falls Seminary in 2003. Since graduation, she has served at Hudson Lutheran Church in South Dakota and now at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Among her accomplishments in ministry are helping to reunite the small, rural Hudson Lutheran congregation, which was suffering turnover and declining Sunday school attendance, and helping to create the ministry Lunch is Served, Inc. in Sioux Falls. Fast worked with other city clergy to launch the program which provides sack lunches for day laborers in Sioux Falls who might not otherwise be able to afford lunch.
Today, volunteer groups and individuals assemble lunches on Monday. Each bag consists of a sandwich, chips, fruit, dessert, and inspirational message. Lunches are distributed as day laborers leave for their assigned job sites on Tuesday morning.
From the work of Fast and the initial task force (including Val Putnam, M.Div. 2003, M.A. in Counseling 2003, and D.Min. 1999), an ambitious and dedicated Board of Directors has evolved. Shirley Halleen, M.Div. 1987, now serves as President of Lunch is Served, and Barb Elkjer, M.A. (Bible and Theology) 2002, is a board member.
