MLEFC Job Description of the Senior Pastor

Principle Function
The pastor is responsible to the church to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ and to teach the biblical revelation, oversee and engage in pastoral care ministries, to provide administrative leadership in all areas of church life, and to supervise the activities of the paid staff.


1. Proclaiming the gospel and teaching the biblical revelation:
• Provide leadership in the planning of worship services
• Prepare and deliver sermons weekly
• Lead special events of the church
• Perform wedding ceremonies and funeral services
• Be involved in the local community through events and/or on local boards
• Oversee adult bible fellowship

2. Pastoral care ministries:
• Lead the church in an effective program of discipleship
• Oversee and engage in missional community groups
• Provide a caring ministry for persons in the church
• Conduct counseling sessions

3. Providing administrative leadership in all areas of church life:
• Work with deacons, church officers, and committees as they perform their assigned responsibilities
• Provide for the training of ministry leaders
• Cooperate with denominational leaders in matters of mutual interest and concern
• Keep the church informed of denominational developments
• Attend all church board meetings and congregational meetings
• Oversee/spearhead weekly prayer time for the local church, missions, missional community groups

4. Supervise the activities of paid staff:
• Hire and maintain staff
• Supervise the work of assigned paid staff workers
• Mentor Youth Director weekly

5. Ensure personal, spiritual, and emotional health:
• Report weekly to one man for accountability to maintain spiritual health, personal and family life
• Take a planned sabbatical after six years of service
• Attend conferences/seminars to benefit personal leadership and denominational support each year
