WHO WE ARE The Mennonite Brethren historically arrived from the Black Sea region of the Russian Federation. As an industrious movement of Christ-followers, they increasingly felt political pressures to pursue religious liberty and ultimately expanded their faith-filled footprint into the United States of America. Those who remained in Russia have largely become identified together with the Russian Baptists. Those Mennonite Brethren who moved from Russia began arriving in the United States in the late 1870's and many determined that Kansas, Nebraska, and the Dakota Territory would become their new mission field. Organized in 1886, the Salem Mennonite Brethren Church (SMBC) has been faithfully fulfilling the Great Commission for more years than South Dakota has been a state! Today, the SMBC family is engaged heavily in farming, and is faithfully fulfilling societal and employment roles in many surrounding towns. The church has a solid core of participating members, financial resources, a nice parsonage, and a specific vision for reaching the younger and unchurch families throughout their region.
WHERE WE ARE Located between Freeman and Bridgewater, South Dakota, our pastoral opening offers a relaxed rural and small-town life with close proximity to urban amenities. With the parsonage located in the community of Freeman, many amenities and shopping opportunities are local. The larger cities of Sioux Falls, Mitchell, and Yankton are just 40 minutes away and serve as commercial, medical recreational and educational centers of southeastern South Dakota. Because of our central location, we have a broad reach potential of over 4,000 people that spans 40+ miles in diameter. We primarily reach people and families connected to five different communities across a four-county region which includes Hutchinson, Hanson, McCook and Turner counties. Reaching unchurched families associated with these communities is our greatest outreach aim. Though our region's economy is firmly rooted in agriculture, people choose to live here for much more than farming. Local residents celebrate family connections, schools activities, proximity to cities, outdoor recreation, and socially conservative values; all of which create a great area in which to raise a family.
WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR Salem Mennonite Brethren Church is seeking a man of God who will faithfully teach the Bible, model personal holiness, shepherd our flock, and mobilize us to relationally reach the lost and unchurched throughout our region. We are a multi-generational church that desires to reach younger and unchurched families and therefore we seek a pastor who will both shepherd our existing church family while also leading us in effectively reaching younger households. We seek a regionally oriented pastor who understands our rural context and who will actively engage in our surrounding communities, developing relationships with community leaders and remaining accessible for the broader pastoral needs of our area. Furthermore, we are praying for a mission, vision and doctrinally aligned pastor who is an engaging communicator of God's Word and whose wife (if married) is visibly supportive and engaged in life of the church.
