Director of Children, Youth, and Family Ministries, Brandon, SD
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE :
The purpose of the position(s) is to direct and coordinate a comprehensive and expanding ministry for children, youth and families that embodies: Our Vision and Purpose: To grow in Christ-likeness as seen in Christian attributes of love (1 Corinthians 13), the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23) and Christian living (Romans 12). Our Mission: REACHING people who aren’t connected to Christ or a church home; CONNECTING to God and one another; GROWING in our faith through SERVING Our Core Values: Casual, Relevant, Action-Oriented and Outward-Focused **This position will work with pastor, staff and volunteers in planning for, developing and supervising the ministries that help Children and Youth grow as followers of Jesus and equip families to anchor this faith development in the home.
The Director of Children, Youth and Family Ministry shall be accountable to and supervised by the Pastor and the Staff-Parish Relations Team.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
(birth – 5th grade) • Supervise the Sunday school, Kid’s Kingdom, Nursery and Vacation Bible School programs. This includes, but is not limited to: volunteer management (see below) evaluation of the above programs and their curricula regularly; tracking of attendance and necessary follow-up; coordination of Bible presentation and Bible Bootcamp. • Identify (in cooperation with Stewardship Team), train, equip and encourage volunteers so that they might be effective in ministering to children. This includes, but is not limited to: communicating the vision, developing relationships, helping address issues/challenges, addressing obstacles to the effectiveness of the ministry. • Plan outreach events that will REACH children, youth and families from outside the church who aren’t connected to Christ or a church home. • Be a liaison to the nursery coordinator/volunteers to provide necessary support/resources. • Work with pastor to connect with and support families partaking in baptism. • Promoting Dakotas UMC camping ministries
(6th- 12th) • Develop effective discipling ministries for Middle and Senior High Youth. This includes but is not limited to: Confirmation, Sr. High Sunday School, Wednesday night programming, retreats/lock-ins, Bible presentation and Bootcamp, Family Faith night, etc. • Evaluate effectiveness of the above programs through regular review of curricula, attendance records, fulfillment of objectives, etc. • Identify (in cooperation with Stewardship Team), train, equip and encourage volunteers so that they might be effective in ministering to youth. This includes, but is not limited to: communicating the vision, developing relationships, helping address issues/challenges, addressing obstacles to the effectiveness of the ministry. • Develop connection with other youth ministers in the BV area, as well as Sioux Falls UMCs to determine the best ways to connect youth to Christ and to a faith community. • Promote camps and/or mission trips as useful tools in furthering youth ministry objectives.
• Develop a ministry that supports and equips families to foster faith development in the home. This includes but is not limited to: providing resources that supplement what children/youth are learning and discussing in church programming; plan events that better equip parents and children to engage in individual/family spiritual practices; etc. • Work in conjunction with the stewardship team and Director of Connectional Ministries to provide parenting and marriage support systems and tools. • Help foster connections between families as a means of support and encouragement • Identify ways to minister to/equip families outside of the standard church programming times • Be visible in the community as a way to connect with church and non-church family as well as better understand the needs of families in the Brandon Valley area.
• Communicate with parents regarding program objectives and expectations • Facilitate communication with children/youth who have been consistently absent • Provide channel of communication between pastor, staff, and volunteers • Inform the congregation about current and upcoming Children, Youth and Family programs through the newsletter, bulletin, website and other media required.
• Work with staff team to understand/work toward the overall vision and objectives of the church. Attend weekly staff meetings, as well as needed retreats and training activities. • Develop volunteer leadership teams to assist in fulfillment of the program objectives. • Equip people for ministry to build God’s Kingdom (Ephesians 4)
