Update: 89 Boxes Prepared for Soldiers

Update: 89 Boxes Prepared for Soldiers

March 10, 2013

Update:

Thank you to all who so generously showed support to our troops by donating cash, goods, and hand-written notes!  The Sioux Falls Seminary community was able to prepare 89 care packages for our troops!

The packages were sent to 1st Lt. Adam Blankenfeld's (son of SFS student Alan Blankenfeld) unit in Afghanistan on Friday, March 1.  The unit, which has 35 members, has already received the boxes and thanked the seminary community for their support.  Additional care packages that were prepared by Sioux Falls Seminary and the Luther House of Study were distributed to other units.

Story:

It is always exciting to receive a package in the mail, and a package from home when you are far away in an unfamiliar place means even more.  Sadly, many men and women who serve our country overseas in the armed forces will never receive gifts from home.  Help us bring comfort to some of our soldiers serving far from their families and loved ones.

Sioux Falls Seminary and the Luther House of Study hope to provide care packages for a unit in Afghanistan that is being led by the son (1st Lt. Adam Blankenfeld, pictured at right) of Sioux Falls Seminary student Alan Blankenfeld.   The goal is to collect enough items and/or donations so each of the 35 soldiers in the unit can receive a "blessing box" or care package.

To help, drop donations at Sioux Falls Seminary by 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 27.  Items being collected include:

  • beef jerky
  • protein bars
  • dried fruit
  • trail mix
  • drink mixes such as Crystal Light packets
  • cookies
  • books
  • magazines
  • personal notes for the soldiers
  • cash donations to help cover postage

Non-perishable items and items that won't melt or spill are best.  (Boxes take approximately five days to arrive after shipping.)

Boxes will be assembled at Sioux Falls Seminary on Thursday evening, February 28, at 6:30 p.m.  Everyone is welcome to come and help assemble the blessing boxes.  Please contact Sarah Stenson or Kate Friesen with questions by e-mailing sstenson@augie.edu or newstartkkf@gmail.com, respectively.
